You don't have to use social media to market your practice ✨
+ Early bird for Radiant Business School
This is the third of a series of four short essays on working smarter, not harder.
The topic for this essay is Marketing.
My story
We are all different. There is no right or wrong way to market your practice, but what is a good fit for someone else might not be a good fit for you.
Social media did not exist when I started my homeopathy studies in 2003.
Twitter and Facebook started in 2006, the year I had my first website built.
In 2010 I started a social dance class, and quickly I learned that all my new dance friends were keeping in touch via Facebook and Messenger.
I didn’t want to miss out so I signed up and once I had my first smartphone I downloaded the Facebook app.
Pretty soon Instagram was also a thing, though you might remember it started off as a photo-sharing app rather than the advertising nightmare it is now.
Between 2009 - 2018 I loved hanging on Facebook, posting and scrolling and joining in discussions. I even met people there who became friends and are still friends today.
I had 1000+ followers on my Homeopathy with Tracy Facebook business page but it took hours every week to find or create content to share, and I found very little engagement unless I was prepared to invest in paid advertising.
The people who liked or commented on my posts were almost always other homeopaths. 😌 This was lovely, but I could see Facebook wasn’t a good place to find connections outside my existing circle.
Eventually I calculated that I spent a minimum of 1 hour a day on Facebook, which was 7 hours per week which added up to a staggering 30 days per year, equal to one full month.
It was shocking to realise that over 9 years I’d spent a minimum of nine months on Facebook, but potentially at least a year or perhaps even two years.
2 years!
All of this from one-two hours per day, scrolling.
Choosing to move away from a Facebook was a bold decision but I have never regretted it.
Could I grow and maintain my practice more effectively without the distractions of social media?
The short answer is yes.
The back story is quite long, but let’s just say that I sought advice from many places and did my best to put it all into action.
Working smarter not harder ✨
Part 3️⃣ - Marketing
Earning a living from homeopathy is not simply a matter of getting more people to come for appointments.
A bigger mindset shift is needed.
Being a homeopath is work and our practice is a business, but that doesn’t mean we have to sell our soul to ‘big social’.
We want to build respect for our work, not just attract attention.
Everything we do says something about us, including the way we market ourselves.
Over the years I have learned many ways to work smarter, not harder with my marketing.
Your time is valuable ⏳
Your time is your most valuable asset. Make yourself a calendar and block out time for marketing. In 6-8 hours per month you can write or review one blog post and write a newsletter. It only takes a few minutes to reach out and ask for a review, or to follow up with someone who promised to write one.Give 👏
Be generous with friends, colleagues, clients. This can include but is not limited to offering homeopathy. Write reviews for local businesses. Make introductions. Share helpful things. Have a sliding scale. Do Pro Bono. When you are generous with others, it will come back to you.Ask 😌
Ask a previous client if they want to work with you again. Use your calendar to see who hasn’t booked their follow up yet. Invite your community to join a workshop. Interview a local business owner for your blog. Ask a local charity if they can help you set up a clinic. Ask for reviews (again!).
Receive 😊
Make a list of all the people who support you. Accept swaps or payment in kind. Say ‘Thank you, that’s wonderful!’ rather than ‘No you don’t have to do that.’ when people offer support. Reply to reviews on Google and send a separate message to say thank you. Keep a gratitude list.
Write ⌨️
Research and write one article a month and at the end of the year you have 12 articles on your blog. Make sure they are aligned with clients you want to attract. Make sure your writing is original. Use subheadings and bullet points. Use tools like Grammarly to help keep your writing easy to read.
Learn simple SEO 🛜
Basic SEO is not hard. It helps Google to rank your website so others can find you. Setting up a Google My Business account is free. Build up your reviews consistently and steadily. Six reviews a year and in five years you have 30, in ten years you have 60. Most people don’t bother to ask. Ask!Write a newsletter 💌
This seems hard at first but it gets easier. Write one a month for a year and the following year use them as templates. Be friendly and interesting. Collect links throughout the month. Be personal. Include photos - your local area, your garden, your dog. This is how you keep people in contact with you.
