This is the second of a series of four short essays on working smarter, not harder.
The topic for this essay is Money and Finances.
My story
We are all in a different place in terms of what we need from our practice financially.
I started my homeopathy studies with no financial concerns as both myself and my partner were working with decent salaries.
I could buy all the books and remedies I wanted, and pay for extra seminars and clinics too.
A couple of years into practice I found myself being the sole breadwinner and it was a steep learning curve.
Choosing to move away from a successful career in teaching and into practice as a homeopath was a bold decision.
When I took the leap and gave up teaching completely, I didn’t know my husband was soon to be made redundant.
My earnings from homeopathy barely covered my overheads, and we urgently needed a stable income.
I reached out to friends in local schools to see if I could pick up some part-time work, which thankfully I did.
My husband went back to full-time study to finish his PhD, and I faced a big decision.
Could I earn enough money from my practice to support us as a family until my husband finished his PhD?
The short answer is yes.
The back story is quite long, but let’s just say that I sought advice from many places and did my best to put it all into action.
Working smarter not harder ✨
Part 2️⃣ - Finances
Earning a living from homeopathy is not simply a matter of getting more people to come for appointments.
A bigger mindset shift is needed.
Being a homeopath is work and our practice is a business.
We need to become comfortable with asking for, and receiving, money for the work we do.
Over the years I have learned many ways to work smarter, not harder with my business finances.
Start small 😌
When you are starting out in practice, if your budget is tight, only spend money on essentials. Use free apps such as Google Meet, and buy small quantities of stationery etc.Avoid transaction fees 💷
Clearly state that payment is by bank transfer only. Card processing fees can add up to 100s annually. Think what you can do with that money.Charge for postage ✉️
Charge the postage fee rounded up to cover packaging materials. If you send 10 tracked large letters per month that’s £35 right there. That’s £420 per year.
Charge for remedies 📧
Send an invoice for repeat prescriptions, or for remedies requested that are not part of your prescription.
Your fees show your value ⚖️
More expensive = perceived higher value. Offer concessions for students and people on a low income. The people who can afford to pay more are therefore subsidising those who pay less.
Set up an account with the Natural Dispensary 🌿
They allow you to set up and share a discount code so your clients can buy supplements and some homeopathy products cheaper and you get commission. Every little helps.Use an accountant to submit your tax return ⌨️
Do this from the beginning. You will be operating at a loss which offsets the need to pay tax, at least initially. Lis Sims, is my lovely accountant who also trained as a homeopath in my class at CHE. She helps me claim for a proportion of my home utilities as I work from home. I didn’t pay tax for years thanks to Lis, and when I did start paying tax, she was there to advise me.
