I’m Tracy, a homeopath based in east London. I’ve been in practice for 17 years and I’ve been sharing thoughts on my practice journey for 9 of them.
Thoughts on not being everything to everyone 💎
As a life-long people pleaser, guilt feelings are very familiar to me.
I like helping people and I like people to be happy.
But, I want to do this in a way that feels right for me.
It’s hard to say no, but I am slowly getting better at it.
In December I received an email from a woman whose homeopath had retired. During our appointment she told me that her daughter and teenage grandson were going to get in touch with me too.
When her daughter reached out to me by email I explained that when I work with teenagers, I like to see them in person. I shared my availability for an in-person appointment.
In her reply she said her son would be more comfortable online.
I recognised that this was pushing my buttons a bit, so I decided to sit with it before I replied.
I was feeling under pressure to accommodate so her son was more comfortable.
I also felt that because I was already seeing his grandmother, I was somehow more obligated to make this work.
I didn’t want to disappoint them.
However, I reminded myself that I have several reasons for wanting to see teenagers face-to-face.
I want to see something of the dynamic between them and their parent/carer
I want to see them in a neutral space, not in their family space or their bedroom
I believe that in-person interactions are important and valuable, and carry weight in a way that online interactions don’t quite manage to do
After some reflection, this is what I wrote in my email reply:
I understand your son prefers to work only online. There are many other homeopaths who work a great deal with young people, and one of them may be a better fit.
I have tried working online with many young people and it is much harder for me to get a true sense of them, and I don't feel I can prescribe so well.
Since I changed to only seeing them face-to-face, with or without a parent present, it works much better.
