When you need to talk about hard things

How are you?
I hope you are keeping warm, and that you’re steadily ticking things off your to-do list. 🎄
This newsletter is two weeks later than I planned, simply because I realised I needed a bit of space for myself, and it was one of the things that got pushed back.
Pushing a few things back turned out to be a good strategy, along with some early nights and a few doses of Nat Mur. ☺️
Today I’m excited to share that I have lots of things planned for you for next year, including a new Hormonal Homeopathy masterclass series I’m teaching with Cassie Everett, starting in February (scroll down to find out more).
Registration details will be included in the end-of-year newsletter, arriving Friday 30th December. ✨
If you are new to the Radiant Business newsletter, welcome!
Keep reading to find some practice reflections, links to articles I hope will support you in growing (or balancing) your homeopathy practice, plus news of my own offerings.
Practice reflections – much-needed counselling skills for homeopathy (and life in general) ♥️
I often find myself taking a bit of a dip in December, which can include a heavy cold, though I seem to be ok so far this year, fingers crossed.
Instead, there is a growing realisation that almost everyone I know seems to be having a hard time one way or another.
These last couple of months I’ve been supporting a few friends who are facing challenging situations, mostly with elderly parents.
Others have kids who are needing extra support and some have different things going on, but are equally stressful.
I’m mindful that I’m a sensitive and intuitive person and I tune into others’ emotions easily.
It can take me a while to recover from conversations because of the mental and emotional energy that it takes to stay present and supportive.
Recently I’ve been thinking back to the counselling framework that was central to the training I did with the Breastfeeding Support Network back in the early 00s.
To qualify as a breastfeeding support volunteer I had to complete one year of training, and complete written and recorded assignments – half of them were assessing my counselling skills.
I worked in breastfeeding support for over ten years, and am grateful for the opportunity to put those skills into practice repeatedly.
Even now, when I find myself in conversations about hard things, I’m able to turn to my skills of active listening rather than relying mainly on my emotional responses.
As a teacher (and as a person) I do love to talk and explain things. 🙋🏼
During my BfN training I learned that in counselling there are other equally valuable skills.
Active listening
Non-judgment
Empathy
Before my counselling skills training I didn’t realise how judgmental I could be at times. It sounds obvious but it is so much better to come from a place where everyone is respected for their views.
By offering active listening as well as empathy in a conversation, the other person feels heard, understood, and may even be able to process their thoughts and emotions.
These skills have been so helpful in my personal life and in my work as a homeopath in equal measures.
Over the last few months they’ve helped me in the following conversations.
A client whose son collapsed and died suddenly
A client who had experienced several late miscarriages
A friend whose mother, mother-in-law and father-in-law are all very ill, but not yet in a care home
A friend who has recently received a diagnosis that her son, daughter and herself all have autism
There’s so much shock, grief and loss in the world at any time, but there does seem to be more than usual at the moment.
I’m wondering if you are also finding yourself emotionally drained by all the sad things around you?
