What we should be telling patients about anti-histamines 💊
Homeopathy offers strategic treatment that works
So many problems with anti-histamines
Most people don’t realise antihistamines are habit-forming.
When people take them regularly, they build up a resistance to the drug which is why they need to take higher doses and may even be afraid to stop.
When I was researching this article for my website, I discovered there were even more side effects than I realised.
Common side effects of anti-histamines:
low energy
low mood
dryness - mouth, eyes, skin
hives and urticaria
headache
constipation
tinnitus
B12 deficiency
anaemia
increased appetite
weight gain
increased risk of dementia
Allergies -> antihistamines -> decreased tolerance -> stronger drugs -> increased risk of side effects
Side effects -> low energy ->low mood -> weight gain -> cognitive decline
In summary, the organs and systems directly affected by antihistamines include:
kidney and bladder
cardiovascular system
central nervous system
gut microbiome
immune system
skin
This should be a concern for all of us.
We need to explain this to our clients as they are generally unaware.
Homeopathy strategy
Fortunately, homeopathy gives us a robust set of tools to address allergies, as well as the symptoms and side effects from medication.
Acute remedies + allersodes + nosodes + drug remedies
Acute remedies relieve symptoms quickly.
Allersodes desensitise from pollens and other triggers.
Nosodes address inherited chronic allergies.
Drug remedies detoxify and rebalance.
I've found that using a structured approach to prescribing is helpful in my practice as I see a lot of cases of allergies with drug layers.
I’m always learning and trying new things, and once I see they are working, I want to share them with you.
With structured prescribing, we are able to:
support organs and systems of the body
prescribe on aetiology (pollens and other triggers)
strengthen the constitution with nosodes
detoxify and rebalance with drug remedies
This might sound complicated, but it’s actually quite simple.
Client reviews
Tracy is currently treating my 10 year old son who has suffered with hay fever and it had made such a huge difference recently to his symptoms and his quality of life. It’s the first May/June he has not been miserable.
I went to her as I was completely over whelmed with allergies and hay fever which nothing would budge. She really listens to what's going on and not only has she helped me with hay fever but lots of other things that I hadn't thought could be improved, (migraine and anxiety to name but two!)

I first offered this course in 2016 and repeated it in 2018, 2022 and 2024.
So far, more than 290 homeopaths completed the training and I've received a great deal of positive feedback from the work they've done with this structured program.
