Who we are is as important as what we do
Maybe, like me, you’ve personally experienced complex bereavement and have been thankful for both homeopathy and counselling to help you through it.
My first experience with bereavement counselling was after a late miscarriage, which left me traumatised. Counselling alongside remedies from my homeopath helped lift me out of depression and allowed me to get on with my life again.
Having experienced the benefits of therapy first hand I was keen to study counselling skills as part of my training with the Breastfeeding Network.
We had to do a lot of face-to-face role-play and tape recordings with written reflection as part of our assessment before we qualified.
Once I had passed, and was working as a volunteer on the national helpline and at breastfeeding support groups I had to attend monthly group supervision, as well as phone supervision in between.
These experiences have given me invaluable skills to weave into my work as a homeopath, even though I don’t have an official counselling qualification.
Myths about grief
Grief is a journey.
“Grief is the price we pay for love.”
Dr. Kenneth J Doka
There are two major myths about the process of grief.
It gets easier each day
It proceeds in predictable stages
It’s actually individual, chaotic and unpredictable.
Disenfranchised loss
As homeopaths we can offer a great deal of support, through the homeopathy process and with remedies.
Loss of a close family member or partner is widely recognised as legitimate grief, but ‘disenfranchised loss’ and ‘complex bereavement’ is also common.
This is why some people need multi-disciplinary support for their bereavement.
More than listening
We can use a counselling framework and skills to support emotional health alongside homeopathy.
Communication skills include:
Active listening – full attention and acceptance
Silence - giving the speaker a chance to think
Reflecting and paraphrasing - mirroring back, check you’ve understood
Rapport and connection - give recognition of effort and courage
To do all these things well involves a high level of awareness both during and after the appointment.
In this webinar I offer you practical counselling skills to use alongside homeopathy.
As always, thanks for reading.
I appreciate you being here. :-)
Please feel free to share with a friend.
