We all need self-care reminders
How well do you take care of yourself?
Do you have enough energy for yourself as well as for everyone else?
Have you noticed any signs you are spreading yourself too thin?
These are questions I ask myself pretty much daily, and I’m always thinking of how I can take care of myself better.
As homeopaths, we are working with people who need our care, and we also encouraging them to make changes in their self-care.
The last year and a half has brought many changes and challenges in my life and my practice, and along with that my self-care definitely slipped. Maybe for you too?
Today I’m sharing some self-care prompts from a book that’s helped nudge me back on course.
Radical Remedies: An herbalist’s guide to empowered self-care
The book in the photo at the top of this newsletter came to my attention through a newsletter from Bookshop.org.uk.
In case you haven’t come across them, they’re an online space where you can buy books from Independent bookshops all in one place.
Radical Remedies is written by Brittany Ducham and illustrated by Elana Gabrielle.
I am full of admiration in how they’ve gathered and presented so much information on self-care and herbs in a book that is useful as well as beautiful.
I especially love their chapter on the Pillars of Self-Care!
Here’s their list of self-care prompts.
Stay hydrated
Ask for support
Set boundaries
Get rest
Open yourself to joy
Be accountable
Move your body
Be emotional
Accept yourself
Journalling insights
If you’ve been on any of my courses you will know how much I use my bullet journal to plan my life as well as my practice.
One of the ways I guide myself is through choosing a word for the year.
My word for this year was ‘Sustainable’.
This word was designed to guide me in making changes to my practice so it felt more sustainable.
For the first part of this year I felt like I was a treadmill and I couldn’t see a way to slow it down without falling off.
I returned to daily ‘morning pages’ - 3 pages of personal writing each morning on waking. This, combined with reading and working through all the exercises in ‘The Artist’s Way’ gave me some insights.
Insights is one thing and putting them into practice is something else!
“Personal accountability plays a big role in self-care, because taking care of yourself is largely self-motivated work… it’s one thing to want to invest in self-care practices; it’s quite another to actually do self-care daily, weekly, and monthly.”
Pillars of self-care
The pillars of self-care from this book helped me to see the different things I could put in place.
Stay hydrated – I always feel more tired when I don’t drink enough water, so I’ve been making an effort to focus on it and it’s helped a lot.
Ask for support – I hired the daughter of a friend to assist me with making up remedy parcels one afternoon per week.
Set boundaries – I filter Discovery Calls and only speak to people who feel like a good fit. I use a content blocker on weekends so I can’t check email.
Rest – I’m in bed by 10.30pm every evening and sometimes sooner.
Open yourself to joy – I try to book travel/entry to see/do something new with someone I care about one day every week.
Accountability – I have either homeopathy, osteopathy or massage every month. This is preventative care rather than treatment.
Move your body – I increased my physical movement to include yoga, running and swimming a couple of times a week each.
Be emotional – I use my journal to write how I’m feeling about my life as well as sharing with my husband, daughter and close friends.
Accept yourself – I’ve taken a good look at the time I have available together with my priorities and made some good decisions.
Putting all of these things in place has taken a lot of effort, planning and organisation but I feel so much better.
Now I just have to keep it going.
Two changes
From September, this newsletter will be monthly, and my Homeopathy newsletter will be fortnightly.
This shift in focus, combined with continued focus on self-care practices will, I hope, enable me to have more free time and energy for working on my book – a practice manual for homeopaths.
How about you?
How are you feeling about your self-care at the moment?
Can the pillars of self-care help you too?

Tracy
Hi Clare, congratulations on your graduation! One thing I recommend is only seeing clients two days per week. If you can include an early evening on one of those days there is rarely an issue. The second thing I recommend is to give yourself permission to focus on one thing at a time. Last - if you don’t see your homeopathy already for support with peri menopause, that might be good to consider. Good luck with everything, it sounds like you’re doing brilliantly. ✨
Thanks Tracy for another fabulous newsletter. I'm grateful for the introduction to Bookshop.org as I've been trying to use Amazon less - I've now moved my wishlist over and placed an order! It might sound strange but my self-care always slips in the summer holidays. Ironically when there's no routine I find it harder to fit in the things that keep me grounded - meditation, morning pages and walking are usually my anchors. I've also recently discovered tapping which is incredibly helpful in the moment of intense emotion, and like you I have regular homeopathy and osteopathy for maintenance. The pillars of self-care you've listed will really help me get back on track and enhance my routines from September. Thank you for the inspiration!
