The topic for this essay is Boundaries.
My story
We are all different. There is no right or wrong way to set boundaries in your practice, but what is a good fit for someone else might not be a good fit for you.
Boundaries was something mentioned by many of my lecturers during my homeopathy studies between 2003 - 2007.
Knowing boundaries are important didn’t mean that I understood how to make that happen.
When I first graduated, I didn’t see the point in having a separate phone, and I used text message with patients which meant I had all their contacts.
Soon after I set up my Facebook account in 2009 I bought my first iPhone and once I had the Facebook app on my phone I allowed it to access my contacts.
I downloaded the Messenger App so ‘Facebook Friends’ could contact me easily.
I was receiving messages from clients via email, SMS message, WhatsApp and on Messenger too.
These messages often arrived outside my work hours.
I might have been doing a school pickup, in the supermarket or during my evenings and weekends.
My family started to complain that I was replying to messages too often.
It took me until 2019 to leave Facebook, but I am still shocked I didn’t get a separate work phone until 2021.
Could I grow and maintain my practice without being available for messages on my phone?
The short answer is yes.
The back story is quite long, but let’s just say that I sought advice from many places and did my best to put it all into action.
Working smarter not harder ✨
Part 3️⃣ - Boundaries
Earning a living from homeopathy is not simply a matter of getting more people to come for appointments.
A bigger mindset shift is needed.
Being a homeopath is work and our practice is a business, but that doesn’t mean we have to be available to everyone at all times.
We need to protect our time, our attention and our energy.
Everything we do says something about us, including the way we set boundaries.
When we set clear boundaries, we also give permission to our clients to do the same.
Over the years I have learned many ways to work smarter, not harder with my practice, and protecting my boundaries is essential for life-work balance.
Your attention is valuable 🎧
Your time is your most valuable asset and your attention is essential. You need focused time for consultations, cases, remedy packages, writing etc.Turn off 🪬
Protect your attention. If you have alerts turned on for everything, turn them off. Delete apps from your phone and see how your focus improves.Terms and Conditions ☑️
Create a client therapist agreement that sets out how you work. Set it up as a Terms and Conditions form for people to sign before your first session.
Auto-respond 🖥️
Write an auto-respond that explains you are working on appointments and prescriptions and you will reply when you are free.
Repeat 🔁
Set expectations and be prepared to repeat them. People don’t listen, don’t remember, etc. Some people do, and in my experience they are rare.
Templates 🛜
Whenever you write an email explaining something, save to use it as a template. Start now and you’ll be glad you did.Reply later 💌
If you can reply to an email in one minute or less, do so. If it is a new or highly valued client, reply straight away. If it is someone who writes often or writes long messages, train yourself to either set it aside to come back to, or to write a reply and send it later.
