5 Ways I Improved my Focus in 2023 🔬
I don’t remember exactly when I started this New Year ritual, but for some years now I have been choosing a ‘word’ to inspire me for the year ahead.
In 2023 my word was Focus.
There were a few areas I wanted to focus on, so I hoped this word would guide my attention to the things that mattered most to me.
My homeopathy practice is important to me, but so is my life outside of work. To be able to focus more on my personal life, I needed to focus on improving my practice.
Focus in My Practice
Amending my Schedule
In 2022 I started using hearing aids, due to hereditary hearing loss that had been gradually increasing to the point where I needed them.
The audiologist explained to me that due to hearing loss, my brain works harder when I am listening. This sounds obvious but it had not occurred to me before.
I soon adjusted to the hearing aids but by the end of the year, I realised there was an optimum limit to how many consultations I could focus on during one day.
In January 2023 I started to spread my bookings across three days instead of two.
My new schedule has pros and cons, but mostly I find that I am better able to focus on both the consultations and the case-work, and I am noticeably less tired at the end of my work days.Doing Casework Chronologically
Since the pandemic and most of my calls moving online, I have found it easier to have a block of calls followed by a block of casework, then a trip to the post office, and then a repeat.
With my new schedule, I have deliberately made space to process prescriptions before starting other consultations.
I also have a new rule which is to process my cases in chronological order.
Some cases are easier than others, but by adhering to this rule, I don’t allow myself to procrastinate on the harder ones.
I do my best to get the prescription decided on, and the homeobotanicals into the post by the end of the following work day.Keeping an Eye on the Time
During the pandemic, I set up a Drop and Go account with the Post Office, which has been life-changing!
I top up my account online, so I’m always in credit. All my packages are automatically logged with a tracking number, so I no longer have to keep receipts.
The last collection time at my local post office is 4.45 pm which means that I need to set off by 4 pm to be sure that the packages will be included in the last post of the day.
This means that I need to focus on my casework to get it done in time to make it to the post.
I do my best to avoid distractions such as reading or replying to emails etc. I find that wearing noise-cancelling headphones helps a lot with this. I don’t listen to anything, I just use them to help me focus.
When I get home from the post office, I can still reply to emails etc. but my focus is to get my packages to the post in a timely way.Conscious Food Choices
For a couple of years, I have been skipping breakfast but in 2023 I reintroduced it again to keep my energy more stable through the day.
My breakfast always includes protein, and I also make a big pot of soup with beans or lentils every Monday morning so I’m all set up for lunches through to Wednesday.
When I felt hungry mid-afternoon, I experimented and found nuts and fruit or granola and yoghurt to be the best snack to keep me going.
Taking care of my nutrition has helped me feel more focused, especially during the afternoon.A Morning Walk
Working from home is sedentary so in 2023 I was determined to get myself moving before starting work every day.
My husband walks our dog every morning and other than when he’s away, he doesn’t want me to do it instead. This has meant that we now go for a daily walk together.
This also has the advantage of having time in green space, and we get to catch up with each other in an ongoing way which is another positive.
I’m home by 9.30 am, then I quickly get changed, make breakfast and then I’m ready for work.
These five habits may not seem all that ground-breaking but combined, they have helped me a lot.
By focusing on my work for three days I have more space to write a newsletter (like this one, or my Homeopathy with Tracy one) and also time for my personal life.
